Broke by ESPN: Why Athletes go Broke!

NFL average salary is $1.9 Million a year.
NFL average career is 3.5 years.
65% of NFL players retire with permanent injuries.

In the meanwhile, a 20 years old Millionaire athlete has to be careful of:

  • crooked financial advisors who want to literally take care of your Money,
  • golddiggers who want to marry and/or get pregnant,
  • family and "friends" who want to borrow Money,
  • miracle can't miss investment "opportunities",
  • legitimate business investments like restaurants, nightclubs, car wash, that will ends up as a failure soon or later,
  • bling bling lifestyles of multiple mansions, car collection, an entourage of sycophants, making it rain in strip club,
  • gambling,
  • etc.

78% of NFL players are broke two years after retirement.
60% of NBA players are broke five years after retiring.

No they are not all dummies!!!
I didn't see any dummies in this documentary.
Watch it and maybe you will realize that you would have done the same.

Hulk Hogan 1998 WCW contract

Hulk Hogan 1998 WCW contract.

Here are some highlights:
  • Hogan received a $2 million signing bonus for simply putting pen to paper.
  • Hogan pocketed 15 percent of sales of every Pay-Per View event in which he wrestled, with a minimum guarantee of $675,000.
  • Hogan made 25% of gross ticket sales each time he wrestled in at WCW Nitro, WCW Thunder or an untelevised WCW house show, with a minimum guarantee of $25,000.
  • While the contract granted the WCW rights to use Hogan’s name and image on promotional products, it explicitly allowed the Hulkster to independently use his name, image and likeness to promote “pasta, pasta restaurants, sandwiches [and] sun tan oil.”
  • Hogan received $20,000 per month for just for wearing NWO shirts on TV and in photo shoots.
  • While traveling for WCW events, Hogan was allowed first class air travel, first class suite hotel accomodation, limousine transportation and on top of that he commanded a $175 per diem (per day) travel allocation.
  • The contract gave Hogan “approval over the outcome of all wrestling matches in which he appears.”
Hulk Hogan was a fine negociator to say the least.

But wait a minute, unlike what you think, Hollywood Hogan wasn't the biggest earners in WCW. It was actually Goldberg with $5 Million a year. Hogan was just close behind.

Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW)

Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW)

As described by ringthedamnbell wrestling website

"Basically ICW is a bit like ECW its heyday. An underground promotion that made its name by being hardcore and x-rated, doing stupid shite that included – but wasn’t limited to – a guy stapling a womans vaginal lips, Paul London getting his balls out and hitting someone with a ‘Flying Teabag Senton’ and, well, GRADO."

The British Wrestler (Full Length)- 46 min

VICE looks at the UK's underground wrestling scene, from the community centres of Plymouth to the streets of Glasgow. A far cry from the now faded memories of terrestrial TV's World Of Sport and even further from the glitz and glamour of the stateside WWE, Brits across the country have been escaping the banality of their everyday lives by moonlighting as pro-wrestlers in the largely unheard scene of today.
