AL HAYMON replaces BOB ARUM as Boxing Top Promoter
The Al Haymon Way OR The Bob Arum Way - Which way do you prefer?
A very interesting view of boxing promotion by Award-winning writer Pedro Fernandez originally published on ringtalk.com CHANGE IS THE ENEMY OF “BOXING ESTABLISHMENT”
San Francisco, CA– Premier Boxing Champions and their leader Al Haymon continue to change boxing as we’ve known it since the Mafia lost it’s stranglehold with the jailing of Blinky Palermo and Frankie Carbo in the 60s. Within a few years boxing went from Mob control to that of a former United States Attorney and Harvard grad in promoter Bob Arum.
SINCE 1965 ARUM #1, 2 OR 3!
Bob Arum and his Top Rank firm promoted epic events, too many to list. With no real competition until the promotional birth of Don King in 1974, Arum and King have both worked together, sued one another, even had a physical altercation at Ray Leonard-Marvin Hagler as I witnessed Bob deny Don access to the ring prior to the decision being announced.
AFTER 50 YEARS BOXING NEEDS “FACE LIFT”
Face of Boxing Establishment Bob Arum
Sans going into a screed on the pros and cons of Mr. Arum who has:
1) Admitted to Felonies, including Conspiracy, Bribery, Money Laundering.
2) Told Media, “Yesterday I was lying, today I’m telling the truth.”
3) In the biggest fight in history, co-promoter Arum was aware of the fact that an MRI taken a fortnight before Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao REVEALED that his guy Pacquiao had a “SEVERELY torn right rotator cuff muscle.”
Suffice to say these actions are indicative of the need to change the smug face of the Boxing Establishment.
HAYMON BRINGS “CLEAN” MONEY INTO BOXING Al Haymon has put together a war chest of $400 million in investor money, some from the UK as well as domestic cash. Boxing’s new face has a plan to bring boxing back to the masses, unlike Arum who has been content to make millions off a minuscule percentage of the population by forcing them into Pay Per View.
UFC NOT “OVER” UNTIL “ULTIMATE FIGHTER” ON SPIKE TV
When the UFC became the property of Las Vegas casino owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, they went into a financial tailspin as their losses neared $30 million before turning off the cash spigot. The turnaround of the UFC was based on the success of their reality TV show, The Ultimate Fighter in 2005.
SPIKE WAS PERFECT OUTLET FOR UFC
New Face of Boxing Al Haymon
As the UFC became the highest rated program in Spike TV history, their Pay Per View numbers began to rise. The UFC leaving Spike TV is something the Network has yet to recover from, although they are working with Bellator MMA and tonight Haymon’s PBC will air Amir Khan-Chris Algieri on Spike.
HOW DARE PBC NOT CHARGE YOU FOR BOXING!
With NBC, CBS, Spike and soon ESPN, and the emphasis on NBC and CBS, boxing is back in 2015!
HAYMON NOT RED RIDING HOOD OR BIG BAD WOLF
Having drawn the wrath of the Boxing Establishment, I mean the Assn.. of Boxing Commissions, Arum, Kathy Duva and lastly Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions filing a $300 million suit against Haymon and company two weeks ago, that to me has the fingerprints of the aforementioned Bob Arum on it.
FIGHTERS & FANS WINNING BIG WITH PBC
In the past month, people who have never enjoyed professional boxing in their lives, millions of them, have been given a taste how intriguing the fight game can be with it’s various personalties and story-lines that lead up to and help make great fights.
BRINGING BOXING “TO THE PEOPLE”
Many people who were fans before the Boxing Establishment fell in love with Pay Per View, are once again watching boxing on network TV. For the first time in a quarter century, boxing is enjoying what could possibly be it’s greatest renaissance in many decades.
ARUM UNKNOWINGLY ADMITS “HAYMON GREAT FOR BOXING”
Recently Massa’ Bob, and I’m sorry but I couldn’t get through this article without bringing up the name bestowed upon Arum by Malcolm “Flash” Gordon, but he was quoted last week as saying that, “Heymon is paying fighters ‘ridiculous’ purses.” I could never say anything so positive about a perceived business enemy, could you?
